Dear friends,

“We did change the system, we did change forever society’s view of ‘unmarried mothers’ and ‘illegitimate children’, we did win almost equal rights to income support and we did win almost equal rights for our children”

Single but not alone: the first 40 years of the Council of Single Mothers and their Children (CSMC) is the remarkable account of how a group of passionate and determined women changed Australian society.

Tracing the origins of CSMC from 1969 when a group of ‘unmarried mothers’ came together to support each other and change the laws that prevented many women from raising their children, to the current day, Single but not alone charts the incredible changes driven by the women of CSMC. These have included the introduction of income support for single mothers, reform of the legal status of children born outside of marriage, changes to the family law system and challenging stereotypes. At the same time CSMC has consistently provided compassionate support for single mothers.

Interspersed with personal stories this history records and celebrates the remarkable achievements of CSMC and the dynamic women who dared to dream and create a better future for all single mothers and their children.

The Council of Single Mothers and their Children is delighted to invite you to the launch of this landmark book (invitation attached).
